Last time we mentioned that Japan is making efforts to change the present education models and the importance of integration of Arts and Science has been commonly recognized by the whole society.

As a result,  Japan has tried to implement new education guidelines from primary school in recent years.

One of the significant change is that programming education has been started from primary schools to cultivate the ability of data processing.

Experts pointed out that, although students can cross over from sciences to the humanities, they cannot cross over from humanities to the sciences if they are not able to do mathematics.

Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics has made mathematics mandatory for university entrance examinations for the 2021 academic year, which became a hot topic and stirred up a community-wide discussion.

Other schools such as Sophia University’s Department of Economics, Tokyo University of Science’s Faculty of Business Administration and Keio University’s Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Commerce also require mathematics in their general entrance examinations.

There is a growing recognition that mathematics is necessary even for humanities departments.

At the very least, it seems that choosing between liberal arts and sciences based on strengths or weaknesses in mathematics will not work in the future.

As pointed out by the Middle School Council of Education, parents themselves have realized the necessity of a scientific and mathematical background above all else.

The integration of arts and sciences has a significant role to play in reducing the social cost of those negative effects of miscommunications.

We will continue to follow Japan’s reforms in this area.
