The paths to Pax Japonica 3 -What is Public Engagement?-

As continued, this blog will discuss what is needed to accomplish our vision, Pax Japonica.
The last blog talked about Anticipatory Governance, in other words, structuring the international scheme based on anticipating future risks is one of the most important elements.
This time, we will talk about the importance of Public Engagement in Pax Japonica.
At first, the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) in the UK defines what Public Engagement is.
Reference below:
“Public engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit.”
So why is Public Engagement looked upon as important?
Because this also leads to the necessity of science technology and innovation policy during social anxiety spreading in modern society. More specifically, by applying Public Engagement to the social problems in Japan and the world such as declining birthrate, environment and energy resources, it will take an important role to make possible to reinforce practical and specific research development for increasing civilians’ consciousness, promoting various sectors to join and solve social problems.

The higher education and research activities here indicate “university”.
Starting from sharing education and research details at universities and aiming to increase the understanding of science technology by civilians shall be the step up to accomplish Pax Japonica, at first.
